On 23rd January 2023, RCE Greater Gombak (RCE G2) received a visit from RCE Tongyeong, South Korea, represented by youth delegates led by their RCE Youth Coordinator, Woojin Lee.
Their visit was part of the Bridge to the World programme at Tongyeong’s Sejahtera Centre, where students undergoing the programme would visit different countries to learn about sustainability practices.
The Blue Earth group, represented by Gukrok Kim, Junwoo Cha, Nanyeong Kim, and Sandeul Kang, were set to visit three RCEs in Malaysia – RCE Greater Gombak, RCE Central Semenanjung, and RCE Penang – throughout their week-long visit.
The visit began with a visit to International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)’s Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity, where they were given a briefing of the centre and RCE G2.
We also heard from the Blue Earth group, who explained about their group and the amazing projects they have been working on in Tongyeong to solve sustainability issues.
Our RCE Youth Coordinator, Br. Ahmad Ali Karim later took the group on a tour around IIUM, starting with the IIUM Gallery, before proceeding to two sustainability projects around IIUM – Aquagreen and Abu Hurairah Club’s Cat Shelter.
The visit proceeded with tours around three other RCE partners – PSPK, where the delegates underwent a brief baking class, MISA, where the delegates learned about sustainable agriculture in an urban environment, and Setiabudi School, where they met with the schoolchildren and student leaders.
Upon returning to IIUM in the evening, the group was welcomed by the Quranic Youth Club who took them on a mosque tour at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque.
The delegation also paid a visit to the Malay Perak House at the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design, and experienced local Malay culture including trying out traditional clothing and playing traditional games.
Their visit did not end that day, as after visiting RCE Central Semenanjung at the University of Malaya on 24th January, the group were taken to visit an award-winning RCE G2 project, the Buku Jalanan Chow Kit school for underprivileged children.
They were later taken on a brief tour around some iconic landmarks in Kuala Lumpur, including the National Monument and the National Mosque.
After a quick lunch of Korean food with RCE G2’s representative, they later departed by train to Penang, to continue their journey to RCE Penang at the University of Science Malaysia.
Their stay in Malaysia concluded with the visit on 26th January at RCE Penang, before returning to Tongyeong on the following day.
